Switzerland: Arosa – and quirky…

arosa-224251_1280Arosa is a little town at the end of the high Schaanfigg Valley in Canton Graubunden, 1800m above sea level, and about 130km south of my home. There’s a lot going on there – skiing in winter, hiking in summer, and as there’s no through traffic, the air is amazing, so it’s a popular health resort too. I spent an afternoon there earlier this summer, and found a whole collection of quirky bits and pieces just waiting to be photographed.

The train ride up from Chur takes you through some lovely scenery:

When we arrived in Arosa, the first thing we saw was this building. I love colour so it’s definitely worth a photo, though it isn’t nearly as impressive as the Hundertwasser architecture in other areas, and the supermarket on the ground floor doesn’t do much for the rest of it…

Further round, we found a more traditional house – wood and geraniums:

The local library is spectacular:

And this is the horse dung depository – very clean and organised!

As you see, it was a greyish summer day when I was there – here’s Arosa in winter sunshine.
wintry-609110_1280I think I might have to go back…

Wonderful views, Linda. It looks absolutely beautiful. That must be the smallest library in the world ;-D

It’s a lovely place, Cathy – I’d love to see it in snowy weather. (And they had a nice (tho’ small) selection of library books, too!

Now the world is tiny! For about five years, from 1999 to 2004/5 my children’s primary school took a party skiing at Easter. We had a 24 hour coach ride from South London to … Arosa! It’s quaint and quirky and one year a local tried to buy my wife in return for his ‘fighting cow’ or vache de guerre as he called her (the cow, not my wife). We were in a bar at the time and it had become quite lively! Gorgeous reminders, Linda.

Goodness, that’s funny! I wonder if we were in the same bar… I’d love to see it by snow, I might pop back in January. I bet it’s more lively with the ski crowd there!

Thank you! It’s a lovely area and well worth a day trip, though I wouldn’t spend an entire week in Arosa unless I was a skier. I might go back this winter and see it in the snow. ๐Ÿ™‚
