Our lake – Lake Constance – is huge. 536 square kilometres, to be exact. Standing on the banks on a misty day, you can almost imagine you’re gazing out over the Atlantic. The photo below was taken from the Austrian end, and shows Germany on the right and Switzerland disappearing on the left.
Last week, Alison Baillie (author of Sewing the Shadows Together) and I took a trip across the water to Friedrichshafen. Below is the ferry we travelled in, named after the lakeside town we started from.
It was a perfect day, and Friedrichshafen was at its best. We wandered along the lake promenade, had lunch on a terrace literally a hop and a skip from the water, and baked in the lovely hot sunshine we’ve had here almost all summer.
We saw several Zeppelins – always a spooky feeling, the way they whirr across the sky.
We didn’t climb the tower to get the view from the top. We talked about it just before lunch, but somehow, neither of us mentioned it again. It was a very hot day… (spot the mountains on the Swiss side).
We wandered through the old town back to the harbour. The photo below is a stock image, but we saw children playing here too. ‘Our’ children were considerably more scantily-clad (did I mention it was a very hot day?), but the joy was the same.
Alison’s photo below, taken on the boat on the way home, shows the light and the colours of our lake to perfection. And yes, we did forget to take photos of each other.
perfect days like this are becoming as rare as hen’s teeth around here. Your post has made me realise that they don’t happen entirely by accident!

Yes, sometimes you just have to make the arrangements and then go! Having said that, this one was pretty spontaneous. I said the day before, ‘Let’s go to Friedreichshafen!’, and Alison said, ‘Ooh, yes!’ And we went… 🙂

It’s lovely, Cathy. And from the water you can see the mountains, which you can’t when you’re standing on dry land on the Swiss side.

It was like a mini-holiday, Helen! I should do things like that more often.
